As a kid in 1970s
mid-urban America, I hoarded back-editions of Upper and Lower Case
Magazine (U&lc) and designed fonts on galleys discarded by my typographer
parents. A quarter-century later this preoccupation with design would come full
circle, as I found myself trundling down Main Street in Park City, to the
premiere of our film THE LANDFILL—a collaboration with Jessica
Edwards (@JessicaEd)
and the astonishing @Gary_Hustwit. Gary had directed a trilogy of
cult design films, notably that love letter to typography, HELVETICA,
and I knew he would be right for the project, which I Executive Produced in
partnership with @MorganSpurlock and @Cinelan.
The film moves the
design conversation to the realm of urban planning and energy policy, by
profiling a small county landfill in Upstate New York. It's using a system of
composting, recycling and methane capture technology to operate sustainably,
while producing electricity for hundreds of homes. By focusing on the
people and ideas behind this initiative, THE
LANDFILL shows the beauty and potential of the stuff we throw
away.
